Capcom will release the free Prologue Demo of Monster Hunter Wilds on Nintendo Switch 2 on October 19 Pacific time, or October 20 in the UK, ahead of the game's full Switch 2 release on December 4, Video Games Chronicle and Eurogamer reported on October 15. Digital pre-orders for the full game open on the eShop the same day, per VGC.
The demo appears to match the Prologue Demo already available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and Steam, VGC reported. Players get full access to the character creator and can play from the start of the game through the end of Chapter 1-3, "To the Forest." Eurogamer noted that all 14 weapon types can be tried. Save data carries over to the full game, as it does on the other platforms.
As with the other versions, the Switch 2 demo does not support online play, which is reserved for the full game. It does support local play, so multiple Switch 2 owners with the demo can hunt cooperatively by connecting their systems locally, both outlets reported. Eurogamer described that as an option the demo lacks on other consoles.
Capcom announced the date on the official Monster Hunter account on X, writing that local play would be supported "so you can play with friends," per VGC.
Why Switch 2 matters to Capcom
In an interview with VGC, series producer Ryozo Tsujimoto said the Switch 2 version mattered both because of Japan's history with handheld Monster Hunter and because it makes co-op play at home easier to arrange. "There was definitely a big culture in Japan for getting together to hunt back in the PSP days, and also then on the 3DS," he told VGC, adding that he expected players in Japan and elsewhere to welcome a local wireless hunt again.
Tsujimoto also pointed to crossplay as a way to mix online and local play. A household with a PlayStation 5 and a Switch 2 could play together in the same room through the crossplay backend, which he called "essentially a virtual local wireless experience," according to VGC.
Eurogamer reported that Capcom has described getting Wilds into a shippable state on Switch 2 as a "painstaking, seemingly endless process," and that the developer said the Switch 2 work helped improve the other versions of the game. The outlet also noted Capcom's stated goal of surpassing Monster Hunter World's sales, with an expansion, Ascendance, in development.
