A developer has turned Valve's Steam Controller into an unlikely self-docking robot. Ray Foss built a browser tool called Auto-Charge Tracker that uses the pad's own rumble motors to nudge it back to its charging base without anyone lifting a finger.

How the tracker works

Auto-Charge Tracker runs as a web app, meaning there's nothing to install to get it going. To set it up, a user points a camera down at the controller and its charging accessory, then taps three reference spots on the video feed: where the wireless charging Puck sits, and the front and back ends of the controller itself. From there, computer vision takes over. The software continuously watches those three markers and calculates which direction the controller needs to move to close the distance to the dock. It then fires the controller's vibration motors in patterns designed to physically inch the device across a surface toward the Puck, effectively walking it home step by step.

Built for convenience, not perfection

Foss designed the tool with a few practical touches. Since it runs in the browser, there's no separate application to manage, and it saves prior camera and calibration setups so repeat users don't have to redo the whole process each time they want their controller to dock itself. That said, the system isn't foolproof. Foss has acknowledged that pinpointing the three tracking markers can be fiddly, and the vibration-powered navigation doesn't always end with the controller successfully reaching the charger. The motor calibration is also tuned specifically for Valve's newest Steam Controller hardware, so the tool is built around that one device rather than older peripherals.

Repurposing hardware Valve already built in

The project doesn't add any new hardware to the controller. Instead, it leans entirely on features already present in Valve's design: the haptic motors meant for in-game feedback double as a makeshift propulsion system, while the existing wireless charging Puck serves as the docking target the software navigates toward. Foss showed the concept in action on X on June 25, 2026, giving other Steam Controller owners a look at the browser-based setup process and the controller shuffling its way toward the charging accessory.

Timing with the controller's launch

The project arrives not long after Valve's Steam Controller itself hit the market in May 2026. That pad supports two charging methods out of the box: a standard USB-C cable or the bundled wireless Puck. Foss's tool specifically targets that second option, automating the last stretch of getting the controller physically onto the charging pad rather than changing how charging itself works. Auto-Charge Tracker won't replace simply picking up a controller and placing it on its charger, and Foss's own caveats about finicky tracking and inconsistent docking make clear it's more proof-of-concept than polished product. Still, it's a creative example of the kind of software-only tinkering Valve's hardware invites, squeezing an extra bit of function out of components already built into the Steam Controller.
