Amazon exec places the next Tomb Raider game in 2028

Jeffrey Gattis said Catalyst will follow Legend of Atlantis in 2028, a year later than the window given when the game was announced.

Tomb Raider: Catalyst looks set to slip by a year. Amazon Gaming chief Jeffrey Gattis, speaking to The Game Business, said the second of the two announced Tomb Raider games will arrive in 2028 rather than 2027.

We’ve announced the two Tomb Raider titles — Atlantis comes February 12th of next year and then we’ll follow on in 2028 with the next one.

Gattis dropped the date while describing the range of Amazon’s investment in games, which he said runs from “what we call game night games, which are those phone-as-a-controller games” costing single-digit millions to develop, all the way up to triple-A production.

Catalyst had never been given a hard release date. It was revealed at The Game Awards in 2025 as one of two new Tomb Raider projects — a re-imagining and an all-new adventure — and carried a 2027 window at the time. The other, Tomb Raider: Legend of Atlantis, remains scheduled for February 12, 2027, a date Gattis repeated in the same breath.

A studio under strain

PC Gamer, which reported the comments, raised the possibility that Gattis simply mixed up his years or his games, then argued against it. Naming 2028 outright, the outlet noted, is a far more specific claim than a loose reference to “next year” from someone momentarily unsure what year it is.

The outlet also pointed to conditions at Catalyst developer Crystal Dynamics, which carried out its fourth round of layoffs in 12 months in March. Studios that have absorbed cuts on that scale routinely insist their roadmaps are unaffected, PC Gamer argued, but the people let go were doing work that no longer has anyone to do it, and repeated layoffs take a toll on the staff who remain.

Neither Amazon nor Crystal Dynamics has issued a formal statement revising the date. PC Gamer said it has asked Amazon whether the 2028 target is accurate and will update its report if it hears back. Until then, the only public marker for Catalyst’s release is a single line from an interview.
