Animal Crossing: New Horizons passes 50 million copies sold

Nintendo's latest earnings report puts the life sim at 50.29 million units through June 30, second only to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe among its Switch titles.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons has sold more than 50 million copies, according to sales figures Nintendo disclosed as part of its latest earnings report. GameSpot reports the game stood at 50.29 million units sold through June 30, the most recent reporting period.

The figure clears a threshold the game had been approaching for some time. New Horizons had sold 49.91 million units through March 31, 2026, meaning roughly 380,000 copies moved over the following 90 days — a modest quarter in isolation, but enough to carry the title past a mark only a handful of games have ever reached.

Second only to Mario Kart

Within Nintendo's own catalogue the game now sits second among its Switch releases, behind Mario Kart 8 Deluxe at 78.53 million units. GameSpot notes that both titles were helped by inclusion in hardware bundles, a distribution route that inflates unit counts relative to standalone sales, though the totals remain unusually large either way.

Measured against the wider industry, 50 million units places New Horizons tenth on the all-time best-selling games list.

The game's commercial history is difficult to separate from its timing. New Horizons launched in March 2020, at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, and its unhurried island-building was widely credited at the time with giving players something to occupy lockdowns. That launch window gave the game an audience well outside the series' usual reach, and its sales curve has stayed unusually long-tailed since.

Nintendo has continued to keep the title in circulation across hardware generations. It runs on Switch 2 through backwards compatibility, and a dedicated Switch 2 edition arrived in January 2026, with existing owners able to upgrade for $5. Both routes give the game a path to keep selling into a new console install base rather than tapering with the platform it launched on.
