Baldur's Gate 3 now supports Xbox Play Anywhere. Players who own Larian Studios’ role-playing game digitally on Xbox can play it on Windows PCs and handhelds through the Xbox app at no additional cost, three years after the game’s release.
Xbox Play Anywhere is Microsoft’s cross-buy program: a supported game bought once through the Xbox Store is playable on both Xbox consoles and Windows PCs, with cloud saves, progress and achievements carried between devices. In practice that means a player on a handheld such as the ROG Xbox Ally X can move a session to a desktop without losing progress.
The addition was expected. Microsoft revealed Play Anywhere support for the game in an Xbox Store listing last autumn, ahead of any official announcement.
A notable name for the program
Play Anywhere has grown steadily but remains far from universal among third-party publishers. Its catalog includes The Outer Worlds 2, Doom: The Dark Ages and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, while last month’s additions were headed by PGA Tour 2K25 and Buckshot Roulette. Against that, Baldur’s Gate 3 is one of the higher-profile games to join.
The support arrives during the game’s third-anniversary period, when it is discounted 30% across several platforms.
The franchise keeps expanding elsewhere
Larian has finished development on Baldur's Gate 3 and moved to its next project, Divinity, but other companies continue to build on the setting. Wizards of the Coast announced Baldur's Gate 3: Astarion, a prequel novel by T. Kingfisher covering the vampire spawn’s life before the game. Dark Horse announced a comic series, which Larian later said it is not involved with, and details on it remain limited.
HBO also announced a Baldur’s Gate television series from Craig Mazin, co-creator of Chernobyl and The Last of Us, continuing the story after the events of the game. HBO and Hasbro have released little since, with no casting, production or release-window information announced.
