Game Science has released a 15-minute gameplay trailer for Black Myth: Zhong Kui, its follow-up to Black Myth: Wukong, giving the first extended look at the new protagonist, the combat and the world.
The footage opens on a calm seaside, foliage moving in the breeze. The new protagonist stumbles onto a beachfront, heads into a cave and finds an old man eating meat. The pair build a raft and try to head out onto the water before a towering wave tears up the plan.
Combat follows. Carrying the old man on his back, the protagonist cuts through a pack of ghoulish enemies with sword attacks, side-steps the largest one, then parries its ignited blade and lands a killing blow capped by a cinematic finisher. The old man appears to die and transforms into a flying collection of leaves, which the hero pursues — dodging an incoming arrow by twisting his body sideways along the way.
As rain sets in, the protagonist throws what looks like a fire bomb that ignites the ground, the enemies and surrounding trees, then absorbs the flame into his sword. Later, against a winged humanoid boss that rips off its own wings to begin a second phase, he electrifies the blade with a carried item. IGN's Wesley Yin-Poole, who broke the trailer down shot by shot, wrote that knowing which element to use and when may be central to the game.
A mystery ally joins that fight, and the protagonist appears to disappear into shadow and merge with or take control of them. In that powered-up state he parries the boss's attacks and lands a flurry of blows before reverting. IGN singled out the parry as the standout of the footage, describing deflections that feel “weighty and unique to the angle of attack.”
Once the boss is beaten it crawls toward the water, where the woman whose body the hero found earlier in a lake emerges, smiles and drags it under. The trailer ends on a montage of cutscenes with more fantastical creatures — including the hero playing instruments with a skeleton band — and a ride through the world on the back of a tiger-like animal. Not a single word is spoken anywhere in the video, in cutscenes or in combat.
Black Myth: Zhong Kui was announced at Opening Night Live last year, alongside an official description from Game Science.
Set against the backdrop of the classic Chinese folktale 'Zhong Kui Banishing Evil,' Black Myth: Zhong Kui is a single-player action role-playing game rooted in ancient Chinese fantasy. The game will deliver distinctive experiences and gameplay features that push our limits, while also bringing fresh ideas and necessary changes to address past flaws and regrets.
There is still no release window and no confirmed platforms. Black Myth: Wukong launched on PC and PlayStation in 2024 and sold 10 million copies in three days; the Xbox Series X and S version arrived on August 20, 2025.
