Call of Duty: Black Ops 2's 14-year-old port was July's best-selling game in the US

Activision's port of Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 was the best-selling game in the US in July 2026 measured by dollar sales, according to Circana's latest monthly report, GameSpot reports. The Black Ops 1 port placed fifth. Both shadowdropped on July 9 for PS4 and PS5 at $40, or $20 for PS Plus subscribers through August 6.

The two ports carry few technical or visual improvements, which was the point: players had asked Activision for the original versions unchanged, warts and all. Combined, the pair are reported to have sold more than 11 million copies and generated over $430 million.

Industry analyst Rhys Elliott put the performance down to pent-up demand. The games were never made available through backwards compatibility on PS4 or PS5, so tracking down an old PS3 had been the only way to play them on PlayStation hardware. Elliott added that Activision spent close to nothing marketing the releases and carries no ongoing development cost for them, and that Sony's 30% cut of the $430 million works out to roughly $130 million “for doing basically nothing” but hosting the games. His report was published in early August, before the figures had run further.

Sony's own storefront numbers point the same way. In the PlayStation Store's July rankings, Black Ops 2 topped both the PS5 and PS4 download charts in the US and Europe, while I Am Cat was the number one PS VR2 title in both regions.

Circana noted that EA Sports College Football 27, July's second-best seller by dollar sales, would have taken the top spot had it been counted together with the EA Sports MVP Bundle, which packages it with Madden 27. The chart below covers physical sales and estimated digital sales.
