Blade and Magik were the most-picked characters in the Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls open beta, according to usage data gathered from high-rank matches during the test's opening day.
The figures were compiled by fighting game content creator AlietteFaye, who tracked character usage in matches at the Vibranium rank and above across the first 24 hours of the beta and published the snapshot on July 25. Blade and Magik tied at the top of the overall usage chart, followed by Iron Man, Magneto and Black Panther. Danger placed last.
Splitting the same data by team slot changes the order. Among Leader picks, the character occupying a team's starting slot, Magik came first, ahead of Black Panther, Blade, Doom and Spider-Man. In the assist slots the order ran Iron Man, Magneto, Blade and Magik.
A narrow sample, not a launch metagame
PC Gamer, which reported the data, describes it as a short snapshot rather than a measure of the game's balance. It covers a single day at the top of the ranked ladder, so it says little about how the wider player base will pick characters, and nothing definitive about what the metagame will look like when the full game arrives. Blade has already drawn calls from players for a nerf.
The outlet also flagged two names it expected to see higher. Green Goblin has been the subject of widely shared combo experiments since the beta opened, and Captain America is the game's starting character. Because the sample is drawn only from high-rank play, characters that are easier to pick up may be under-represented in it.
The open beta made 16 of the game's 20 launch characters playable. It was also disrupted on both platforms: PlayStation Network was down for much of the opening day, and PC Gamer reported poor PC performance for many players.
Producer Takeshi Yamanaka confirmed the week before the beta that Phoenix Cyclops will be the first of four downloadable characters planned for the game's first year.
