Blizzard and Netflix are developing an animated Diablo series

Blizzard president Johanna Faries announced the show at BlizzCon 2026 and said talks are underway on Overwatch and Warcraft adaptations.

Blizzard Entertainment and Netflix are developing an animated series set in the world of Diablo. Blizzard president Johanna Faries announced the project on stage during the BlizzCon 2026 opening ceremony on September 12, according to IGN, Polygon and PC Gamer.

The announcement did not come with a trailer, a release window or details about the show's story or creative team, PC Gamer and GameSpot reported. Faries told the crowd she had asked to share more but could not yet, and promised further details as soon as possible, IGN reported. In a press release quoted by PC Gamer, Blizzard said the series is "only the beginning" of plans to tell stories from its universes beyond games.

Overwatch and Warcraft under discussion

Faries also said "great discussions" are being had about adaptations for the Overwatch and Warcraft communities, and suggested other Blizzard universes could follow. GameSpot noted that she did not say whether anything beyond the Diablo series is official, and Polygon reported that Blizzard said it was too early to name partners or formats for those projects. GameSpot reported that Faries framed the move around the company being named Blizzard Entertainment, signaling it does not intend to limit itself to games.

Blizzard's last major screen adaptation was the Warcraft film, released about a decade ago, which GameSpot noted did not perform well critically or commercially. PC Gamer pointed to Netflix's animated game adaptations Arcane and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners as examples of the format reaching well beyond their games' player bases.

Part of a wider Microsoft push

Video Games Chronicle reported that the announcement comes as Blizzard's parent company Microsoft works to bring more of its gaming franchises to film and television. It cited A Minecraft Movie and the Fallout TV series as successes and pointed to an Entertainment Weekly report that a live-action Sea of Thieves film is in the works. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has said there is "more appetite to work with us on titles than ever before."
