Blizzard Entertainment announced Diablo 5 during the BlizzCon 2026 opening ceremony on September 12, and said the next mainline entry in the action RPG series will release in spring 2029. The reveal came with a short teaser that, according to Polygon, showed a horde of angels being slain by Diablo's forces.
The game is set about 100 years after the events of Diablo 4. In that time, Sanctuary has fallen, its heroes are gone and Diablo, the Lord of Terror who first appeared in the original game, has won the war between good and evil. IGN reported that it will be the first game in the series set entirely after the apocalypse, reversing the premise of earlier entries, which Eurogamer noted all centered on stopping one before it happened.
For the first time, you won't be fighting to stop Diablo from taking Sanctuary; you'll enter a world where he already has, with no towns and safe places waiting to protect you.
Production director Tiffany Wat said the setting changes how players survive, what powers they are willing to claim and what they are willing to sacrifice, framing the game around the question of what players must become once the world has already fallen, Video Games Chronicle reported.
Classes and what is still unknown
A follow-up BlizzCon panel, hosted by Blizzard president Johanna Faries alongside the development team, confirmed two returning classes, the Demon Hunter and the Monk, plus a new class called the Plague Knight, according to Eurogamer. The outlet said the panel shared little about core gameplay systems or progression. Polygon reported that Blizzard did not announce platforms.
A spring 2029 release would land roughly six years after Diablo 4, which launched in June 2023. Polygon noted that the gaps between earlier mainline entries were far longer: Diablo 2 followed the original in 2000, Diablo 3 arrived in 2012 and Diablo 4 came 11 years after that.
Diablo 4 news from the same show
Blizzard also announced the Amazon as a new class for Diablo 4, arriving in 2027, and Shely confirmed a September 15 date for Diablo 4 on Nintendo Switch 2. Diablo 4 has received two expansions to date, Vessel of Hatred in October 2024 and Lord of Hatred in April 2026, according to Polygon.
Eurogamer reported that the Diablo franchise has passed 130 million players worldwide and marks its 30th anniversary this year. Blizzard also used the ceremony to confirm an animated Diablo series in development with Netflix.
