Capcom aims to push Monster Hunter Wilds past World’s 30 million sales

The publisher told investors it wants Wilds to overtake Monster Hunter: World over the medium to long term, after a year of slowing sales.

Capcom has told investors it intends to drive total sales of Monster Hunter Wilds beyond those of Monster Hunter: World "over the medium to long term," setting the publisher a target that would require a substantial change in the newer game's sales trajectory.

The statement appeared in Capcom's latest investor Q&A and financial report, covered by PC Gamer and Eurogamer. Monster Hunter: World has sold more than 30 million units since its 2018 release and is Capcom's best-selling single title; PC Gamer reports it still sold over 780,000 copies in the most recent quarter. Wilds, which launched in February 2025, had sold 11.4 million units as of March 31, 2026.

The gap has widened rather than closed. Wilds set launch records but its rate of sale fell sharply afterwards, and PC Gamer notes it did not appear on Capcom's best-seller ranking for the latest quarter at all. Eurogamer reports that 2021's Monster Hunter Rise outsold Wilds by the end of last year.

What Capcom says it is doing

Capcom attributes part of the recovery it has already seen to technical work. "Ongoing enhancements to the technical performance of Monster Hunter Wilds have led to sales for the game improving," the company said in its report, referring to the optimisation problems that dominated criticism of the game after launch.

The publisher also pointed to two commercial levers. It said it had "seen a response to" the announcement of the Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance expansion "and related pricing measures" — a reference to a recent price reduction. Separately, Capcom has released a free demo covering the game's first three chapters on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series consoles and Steam, with save data and character creation carrying over to the full game for anyone who buys it.

We plan to continue improving the game’s technical performance as we aim to drive its total unit sales beyond those of Monster Hunter: World over the medium to long term.
Capcom investor report

Both outlets frame the goal as achievable but distant. A Nintendo Switch 2 port could widen the game's audience, and past Monster Hunter expansions — World's Iceborne and Rise's Sunbreak — lifted their base games' standing considerably. Capcom did not give a timeframe for the Ascendance expansion or a target date for passing World.
