CD Projekt Red targets 2028 for The Witcher 4 and skips it at Gamescom

Joint-CEO Michal Nowakowski says more than 500 developers are on the game, which will not be shown at Gamescom 2026.

CD Projekt Red is targeting a 2028 release window for The Witcher 4, joint chief executive officer Michal Nowakowski said in a video message posted ahead of Gamescom 2026, while confirming the game will not be shown at the event.

So while we're not showing The Witcher 4 at the event and we're not ready to share an exact date, I can tell you this: The Witcher 4 is targeting a 2028 release window.
Michal Nowakowski, joint-CEO, CD Projekt Red

Nowakowski said more than 500 developers are working on the game, which he described as the studio's "biggest, boldest, and most ambitious game to date." He said the team is at work on "a brand new saga, one with Ciri at the helm," and that The Witcher 4 features a large open world, action-oriented gameplay and what he called a deep, impactful story. He asked players to "let the team cook," adding that the wait would be worth it.

The wording is a target rather than a date. GameSpot noted that a targeted window can move, pointing to the delays that preceded both The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Cyberpunk 2077, and Eurogamer made the same caveat. Polygon reported the window follows an earlier statement from the studio that ruled out a release by the end of 2026 without naming what would come after it.

The Witcher 4 opens a new trilogy that CD Projekt has said it wants to ship inside a six-year span. IGN and Polygon both noted that a 2028 start would put The Witcher 5 around 2031 and The Witcher 6 around 2034 — a pace Polygon called bold given that the original trilogy ran from 2007 to 2015 and that development timelines across the industry have lengthened since. Rock Paper Shotgun reported that recent CD Projekt financial updates had already pointed toward 2028 rather than an earlier year.

Songs of the Past takes the Gamescom slot

In place of The Witcher 4, CD Projekt Red will use Gamescom to show Songs of the Past, the third expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. The studio announced it in May and, as IGN notes, has not shown it off since; Rock Paper Shotgun expects the full reveal at Opening Night Live on August 25. Nowakowski said the team has "a lot of the expansion to show off, including a taste of its dark story," and the new continent it brings.

The expansion returns players to Geralt rather than Ciri, is co-developed with Fool's Theory, and is due in 2027 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. GameSpot reported the studio also has "a surprise or two to share" across livestreams planned during the show.

GameSpot reported that CD Projekt Red is working on several other projects alongside the Witcher trilogy, among them Cyberpunk 2, a Witcher game described as multiplayer-focused, and a title made in partnership with Scopely.
