Chuhai Labs has dated Wild Blue Skies, its on-rails shooter, for August 13 on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox on PC. The studio set out the release date and a summary of the game's design in a development post published on Xbox Wire. The release supports Xbox Play Anywhere, so mission progress and achievements carry between the console and PC versions.
The studio, led by director Giles Goddard, describes the game as a deliberate return to the arcade on-rails shooters of the 1990s rather than a modernisation of them. Missions are structured as short episodes inside a world the team says it mapped out before building any of them, with each one starting from an environment and a narrative pitch before geometry, encounters and art were layered in.
Design decisions
Chuhai Labs says the most consequential change during development was cutting view distance. Long sightlines made enemies appear to spawn from nothing and encouraged players to shoot beyond their effective range; shortening the draw distance narrowed attention to the immediate encounter. The team calls the change controversial internally at the time it was made.
Other systems are described in similar terms. A dithering effect on the player's aircraft keeps it framed without blocking the view ahead. Dodge rolls deflect enemy fire when timed correctly rather than only evading it, and in free-flight missions the brake can be used to turn 180 degrees onto a pursuing enemy.
Art and cast
The visual treatment is an outlined cel-shaded look for characters, enemies and aircraft against painterly environments, which the studio credits to Japanese animated films and specifically to Studio Ghibli. The interface was rebuilt around simple shapes intended to be read at a glance.
The squad at the centre of the game — Bowie Stray, Roe Whitetail, Chuck Barbacoa and Thorne — is voiced by Jonah Scott, Suzie Yeung, Edward Bosco and Daman Mills respectively. Between them the cast has credits in Beastars, Final Fantasy VII Remake, Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail.
