Cyberpunk 2077 is seeing its strongest Steam numbers in more than two years, with a combination of deep discounting and renewed anime buzz pushing concurrent player figures sharply upward. The resurgence positions CD Projekt Red's open-world RPG for another wave of new and returning players. Over the past month the game averaged roughly 30,000 concurrent Steam players per day, according to SteamDB data. That figure spiked dramatically in the most recent week, with a peak of more than 87,000 simultaneous players — the game's highest concurrent count on Steam in over two years.
A Steep Discount Is the Primary Driver
The clearest explanation for the jump is price. The Steam Summer Sale has dropped Cyberpunk 2077 to $18, representing a 70 percent reduction from its standard retail price. The Phantom Liberty expansion is separately discounted as well, also available for $18 — a 40 percent cut. Both deals run for the duration of the sale event. For players who skipped the game on launch or drifted away in the years since, the low barrier to entry has clearly proved effective in pulling them back to Night City.
Edgerunners 2 Trailer Adds Timing Tailwind
The price drop coincides with the release of a trailer for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2, the follow-up to the Netflix anime series that became tightly linked to the game's rehabilitation. The sequel's trailer landed this week, giving lapsed players an additional reason to revisit the title and giving curious newcomers a cultural entry point.
How the First Edgerunners Changed Everything
The original Cyberpunk: Edgerunners has become a well-documented case study in how ancillary media can reverse a game's trajectory. After the anime launched on Netflix, Cyberpunk 2077 sales surged to 20 million units and CD Projekt Red recorded its most profitable quarter in company history. At the height of that wave, over one million players were logging into the game daily. The anime is widely credited — alongside significant internal changes at CDPR and a sustained post-launch update campaign — with turning a troubled release into a long-term success.
Where the Game Stands Now
As of mid-2025, Cyberpunk 2077 had moved 35 million copies across PC and console platforms. That figure reflects years of continued investment from CD Projekt Red following a December 2020 debut that was marred by performance issues and consumer backlash. The studio has poured numerous updates and upgrades into the game in the years since. Development on a full sequel, currently referred to as Cyberpunk 2, is ongoing. Whether the current spike sustains beyond the Summer Sale window will likely depend on how much momentum the Edgerunners 2 announcement generates. If the original anime's impact is any guide, CDPR may be positioned for another prolonged engagement boost — this time with a much larger installed base and a healthier reputation behind it.
