Danganronpa 2x2 has been pushed from 2026 to early 2027, and the developers have named Grand Theft Auto 6 as part of the reason. In an interview with Crunchyroll, series creator Kazutaka Kodaka pointed to a major upcoming release the team wanted to steer clear of, describing it as "a certain AAA/AAAA title that is gonna be released soon".
Asked directly whether he meant Grand Theft Auto 6, Kodaka did not deny it, and gave a second, more personal reason.
I wouldn't have time to make the game while playing Grand Theft Auto 6, so it was inevitable that we moved the release time.
Rockstar's game is scheduled for November 19, and Polygon notes that the number of titles delayed or moved away from that release window has continued to grow as the date approaches. Danganronpa 2x2 is one of a series of games to shift out of the way, and Kodaka is among the few developers to say so directly rather than cite the usual reasons.
What the extra time is going toward
Kodaka said the delay has given the team additional development time. Danganronpa 2x2 is a remake of 2012's Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair, the second entry in the murder mystery visual novel series, and goes beyond a straight visual refresh: alongside graphical improvements and quality-of-life changes, the game map is being rebuilt from 2D into 3D, replacing the side-scrolling environments the series has used since the original.
The remake also adds a new story route called Slayhem Mode, telling a narrative that does not appear in the original game. Producer Shohei Sakakibara has said Slayhem Mode will run to roughly 35 hours of gameplay, against about 30 hours for the original scenario. Kodaka has form for that scale of branching: his post-Danganronpa project The Hundred Line shipped with 100 separate endings.
Danganronpa 2x2 is now set for release in early 2027 on Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Windows PC and Xbox Series X/S. Neither Spike Chunsoft nor its publisher has given a narrower date.
