Spike Chunsoft has confirmed that the Nintendo Switch 2 edition of Danganronpa 2x2 will ship as a game-key card in every region, including North America and Europe, rather than the full game card originally planned, Dexerto reports. The publisher said the decision "was not taken lightly" and that it has no further details to share.
The change has already cost some buyers their orders. Preorders placed directly through Spike Chunsoft's US store for the Psycho Tropical Vacation Package were cancelled outright, with refund notices going out by email.
UK and EU customers who bought through the official store keep their orders, with the key card swapped in, and anyone who preordered through other retailers is in the same position.
Only the Switch 2 version changes
The other platforms are unaffected. Danganronpa 2x2 still ships on a full disc for PlayStation 5 and on a proper cartridge for the original Switch, so the substitution is limited to the Switch 2 release.
Game-key cards look identical to standard cartridges but carry no game data. Players still have to download the full game and be connected before the card does anything, which is why collectors have objected to the format since it launched. Some publishers have already reversed course and moved their Switch 2 releases back onto full cartridges.
Nintendo has been tracking that reaction. It ran a survey last year asking Switch 2 owners how they felt about the game-key card format.
The visual novel is not due until early 2027, having moved out of the back half of this year - a shift Dexerto attributes to avoiding a launch alongside GTA 6.
