Dark Souls 2 finally gets a seamless co-op mod, in public alpha

Modder Yui, who made the seamless co-op mods for Dark Souls Remastered, Dark Souls 3, Elden Ring and Armored Core, has released an alpha for Scholar of the First Sin.

Dark Souls 2: Scholar of the First Sin can now be played in its entirety with drop-in, drop-out co-op, after modder Yui released a public alpha of a seamless multiplayer mod for it, Eurogamer reported. It was the only game in the Dark Souls trilogy to have spent years without one.

Yui is also responsible for the seamless co-op mods for Dark Souls Remastered, Dark Souls 3, Elden Ring and Armored Core.

Dark Souls 2 supports co-op as it ships. But, as with other FromSoftware-developed games, the process is convoluted and carries a number of limitations that prevent players from playing alongside their friends without interruption. Yui’s mod works around many of those limits, making it possible to play through the game with as many as five other players in a single session, removing progression blockers and keeping every player’s session in sync.

The mod can be downloaded from NexusMods or GitHub.

It is an alpha, and Yui is using it to test the mod and fix bugs. Eurogamer notes that the experience is not expected to be as polished as her other mods. Documented problems include enemy de-sync when a player dies, including during fights with bosses such as Velstadt and Sinh, and interactions such as opening and closing doors or picking up items, which may not always stay in sync for everyone in the session. Yui’s Patreon post carries the full list of known issues.

Multiple patches have already been released since the alpha went out.
