Red Hook Studios has announced The Fire's Edge, a new expansion for the original Darkest Dungeon and the first DLC the game has received since 2020. It is scheduled for August 18, marking the tenth anniversary of the game's 1.0 launch, and is open for wishlisting on Steam.
The headline additions are two recruitable heroes borrowed from Darkest Dungeon 2: the Duelist and the Runaway. Red Hook describes the Duelist as a complex damage dealer that moves between the party's ranks, able to maintain Riposte while switching between Defensive and Aggressive stances. The Runaway is a position-flexible damage dealer built around a Burn damage type, which the studio says synergises with teams that use Stuns and Pull, Knockback or Shuffle effects.
Red Hook has described the pair as a re-visioning of their sequel counterparts rather than direct ports, so their kits are not expected to behave identically to the Darkest Dungeon 2 versions.
New districts and trinket mechanics
Beyond the heroes, the DLC adds three new Hamlet districts and a set of new trinket mechanics. The districts announced so far are:
- Academie Duello
- Craftworks
- Archaeological Base Camp
The new trinket systems are named as trigger uses, quest charges and progressive trinkets, though Red Hook has not yet explained how any of them work. The studio has said further writing, events and additional content are still to be detailed. No price has been announced; Polygon notes that previous Darkest Dungeon DLC has typically launched at $9.99.
One open question for long-time players is mod compatibility. Red Hook has acknowledged concern that an update of this size could break mods built over the past decade, and says new tooling is in development for mod authors. It has not promised that existing mods will work on day one.
The Fire's Edge arrives August 18 on all platforms except Xbox, where Red Hook says it will follow at a later date that has not been announced. The studio has separately indicated that further DLC for Darkest Dungeon 2 is planned for early 2027.
