Defender of the Crown, the Amiga strategy game that turns 40 this year, is back on PC in a package called The Legend Returns. It bundles the original game with a complete visual revamp and an entirely new roguelite mode, and it is available on Steam, Rock Paper Shotgun reports.
The original is a strategy game set in medieval England after the death of the king, with rival factions competing for control of the country. The player builds the largest army they can, invades castles and takes part in the occasional joust. That version is included exactly as it was, original pixelated Amiga graphics and all.
Three ways to play
The second mode is the same game rebuilt with modern presentation, described by the developer as carrying refined mechanics and smoother systems. Much of the art is still pixel art, redrawn with contemporary detail; the jousting in particular has been reworked, while the option to play the untouched original remains alongside it.
The third is new. Kingdom mode mixes deckbuilding with dice-driven combat across procedurally generated maps. According to the press release, players are tasked with uniting the kingdom by defeating three enemy lords across a war-torn map while contending with brigands, rogues and Norman forces. Runs grow more complex as new dice types, relics and mechanics unlock, and the world around the battlefield offers tournaments to enter, gold to raid and castles to besiege.
Rock Paper Shotgun notes that one holdover from the 1980s original, the business of rescuing Saxon ladies, reads as dated four decades on.
