Destiny 3 petition passes 400,000 signatures

A Change.org petition calling on Sony to greenlight Destiny 3 has passed 400,000 signatures, more than doubling its total since late May.

The campaign, started by Harley Casto, followed Bungie's confirmation in late May that updates for Destiny 2 would come to an end as the studio shifted its immediate focus to Marathon.

From 170,000 to 400,000

The petition had gathered roughly 170,000 signatures in late May. Casto's case for a sequel argues that the "desire for new adventures, fresh storylines, and innovative gameplay features is palpable among players everywhere," and the comment threads attached to the campaign are largely players describing long histories with the series.

The signatures themselves come with commentary. Dexerto notes that many of the people signing have attached personal accounts of the time they have put into the series over the past decade, and of the friendships built through it, rather than arguments about the game's design or business model.

It is not the only channel the community has used. Dexerto reports that players review-bombed Marathon across platforms after the Destiny 2 announcement, and that Bungie developers themselves learned of the change only when it was made public.

What the petition is up against

Destiny 3 has been reported as not being in development at Bungie, and the studio went through a round of layoffs in late June. A petition has no formal standing with either Bungie or its owner Sony, and neither company has publicly responded to it.

What the signature count does measure is the size of an audience that has not moved on. Whether that registers as a commercial argument inside Sony, rather than as sentiment, is a separate question, and one nothing in the public record answers yet.
