Double Fine regains IP and publishing rights to its games after Xbox split

Tim Schafer says the studio has its IP and publishing rights back following its separation from Microsoft, and is crowdfunding an Amnesia Fortnight game jam.

Double Fine Productions has regained the intellectual property and publishing rights to every game it released while it was owned by Microsoft, studio head Tim Schafer said during a conversation with Kinda Funny Games, IGN reports.

The transfer of the IP came back to us, and we get the publishing rights back to all our games.

Schafer attached one caveat to that: some listings may still say Microsoft owns individual titles for now. "It just takes a while for it to all process," he said. The headline, in his telling, is that "when people buy our games, it supports the studio."

That was the point he returned to when fans asked how they could help the studio through its new chapter. "If you're curious, buying any of our games helps support the studio," Schafer said. "We can turn that money into revenue that helps us extend that runway."

The runway is the term Microsoft used when it cut the studio loose. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma said early last month that Double Fine, along with South of Midnight developer Compulsion Games, would keep their IP, their catalogues and a "runway for their next games" under a restructuring plan that also laid the groundwork for 3,200 layoffs across Xbox teams. Double Fine's return to independence was followed by layoffs affecting 25% of its own team.

The studio's nearest-term plan for extending that runway is a crowdfunding campaign it revealed the same day, a Kickstarter page for Amnesia Fortnight 2026, Indie Reboot. The game jam it funds is set to begin on August 31 and run through most of September, with backers choosing which ideas make it to the prototyping stage and one prototype eventually becoming what the campaign calls a "real (small) game." 2 Player Productions will film the process for a documentary.

Beyond the jam, Schafer said there "are other projects we're working on" without saying what they are. He also said Kiln, the studio's 2026 pottery-based multiplayer game, is still being worked on behind the scenes, with new maps and modes on the way and a price cut planned.
