Dragon's Dogma 2 director says a Hard Mode is in development

Kento Kinoshita confirmed the mode in a Steam Q&A for the Dark Arisen expansion, aimed at players at or near the level cap.

Capcom is working on a Hard Mode for Dragon's Dogma 2, director Kento Kinoshita said in a question-and-answer session published on the game's Steam page. The mode is aimed at experienced players whose characters have reached or are approaching the level cap.

Kinoshita and producer Naoto Oyama took turns answering player questions in the Q&A, which was themed around the forthcoming Dark Arisen expansion.

A response to a softened core game

Alongside the expansion, Capcom has been changing the base game in several ways — including making fast travel considerably more accessible. Some players have read those changes as reducing the game's difficulty, and the Hard Mode is the studio's answer.

We're aware that there's a very wide range of player level across the community, so with that in mind, we're adjusting the balance so that everyone can enjoy the experience — whether they're just starting their adventure, still progressing through the game, or have already completed multiple playthroughs.

Kinoshita also pointed to two of Dark Arisen's new experiences, Forsaken Dominion and Lost Rites, as content built for players looking for a higher level of challenge. He then said the team was "working on a Hard Mode that will provide a satisfying challenge for seasoned players".

Details still unannounced

Kinoshita gave no specifics on what the mode will change, and the Q&A did not say whether it will require the Dark Arisen expansion or be available to base-game players as well. Because the Q&A was framed around the expansion, Eurogamer read the former as more likely, though Capcom has not confirmed it.

The mode also appears to be early in development: Oyama asked players to stay tuned for further updates on its details and release window, neither of which has been given.

Dark Arisen releases on October 9 for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. A Switch 2 version bundling the base game with the expansion arrives the same day. Kinoshita took over direction of the series following the departure of Hideaki Itsuno, who led development until he left Capcom.
