Dungeons & Dragons opens Universes Beyond with a World of Warcraft book

Wizards of the Coast announced a 256-page World of Warcraft sourcebook at Gen Con 2026, the first title in a crossover line borrowed from Magic.

Wizards of the Coast has announced Dungeons & Dragons: World of Warcraft, a 256-page hardcover that adapts Blizzard's MMO for the tabletop roleplaying game. The book was revealed during the publisher's D&D keynote at Gen Con 2026 and is the first release in a Universes Beyond line for D&D, Polygon and PC Gamer reported.

Universes Beyond is the branding Wizards already uses for licensed crossovers in Magic: The Gathering, where sets built around Final Fantasy, Marvel and Avatar: The Last Airbender now account for half of the card game’s annual releases. Polygon reported that Magic generated $1.72 billion in revenue in fiscal 2025, with much of its recent growth attributed to those sets.

What's in the book

The sourcebook draws on the 22-year history of the MMO, including the 2026 expansion Midnight. It adds 11 playable species such as Pandaren and Draenei along with new elven lineages, six entirely new subclasses and three updated for the 5.5e ruleset, covering Death Knights, Demon Hunters and Shadow Priests. Both outlets also list more than 60 new spells, over 50 monsters, seven dungeons, 26 magic items including artifacts, and renown rules for 23 factions, plus subsystems for professions, mounts and companions. Stat blocks cover Azeroth figures including Jaina Proudmoore and Arthas Menethil.

Our approach in this book is to present all the World of Warcraft classes and each specialization within those classes and tell you how to build that character using either rules in the Player's Handbook or new rules in this book, usually some combination of both.
James Wyatt, principal game designer, speaking at a virtual press conference

Rather than reusing in-game art, the book mixes illustrations from earlier World of Warcraft adaptations, including the discontinued World of Warcraft Trading Card Game, with new work closer to the style of the Player’s Handbook. Hasbro is releasing an accompanying line of miniatures featuring Arthas and the demon hunter Illidan Stormrage, and an Icecrown Citadel map pack that includes a digital adventure taking a five-person party from level 16 to 20.

PC Gamer reported that preorders open on July 30, with early access from November 3 and wide release on November 17. Polygon reported that the book anchors the Season of Champions in the new seasonal model for D&D and is currently the only confirmed Universes Beyond title.

Wizards also said it will license several of its own settings to outside publishers, with Kobold Press working on the Forgotten Realms, Ghostfire Gaming on Ravenloft and Visionary Production & Design on Eberron. Executive producer Greg Bilsland said the aim is to stop players waiting decades between returns to settings such as Eberron, Ravenloft and Dark Sun, which a team of limited size has struggled to support with adventure content.

Crossovers are not new to D&D, which has previously published box sets based on Rick and Morty and Stranger Things and books drawn from Magic settings. Polygon noted that outside publishers have also used the Open Game License to adapt other properties, including a World of Warcraft roleplaying game built on D&D 3.5 rules in 2005.
