Electronic Arts has removed microtransactions from EA Sports College Football 27 following criticism from players and content creators, GamesIndustry.biz reported in July.
The paid progression options had been added to the game's single-player Road to Glory and Dynasty modes. EA acknowledged that it had, in its own words, missed the mark with their introduction.
Earlier entries in the series let players use experience modifiers to level up more quickly. In College Football 27 those modifiers were replaced with purchasable items priced between 9.99 and 149.99 US dollars.
Disclosure and the creator response
Citing IGN, GamesIndustry.biz reported that content creators said the microtransactions were not disclosed ahead of launch and did not appear in pre-release previews.
This was added independent of deeper mode progression with the aim to give players more choice, but what you've said is that they're not adding the value we intended.
EA said its goal for live service plans in College Football 28 and beyond would be to deliver features and content with greater transparency and communication.
Open questions for existing purchases
GamesIndustry.biz reported that it was not clear at the time of publication whether refunds would be offered to players who had already bought in-game currency.
EA described one consequence of the removal as an unfortunate side effect: players holding College Point balances in their wallets will no longer be able to apply those balances in the Road to Glory or Dynasty modes.
