Elite Dangerous reveals the Rhino, an SRV built for surface mining

Frontier Developments says the six-wheeled buggy arrives later this month and will introduce a new way of gathering raw materials at planetary geological sites.

Frontier Developments has formally revealed the Rhino, a new surface reconnaissance vehicle for Elite Dangerous that the studio says will arrive later this month. The reveal confirms what players had read into an earlier teaser: the next vehicle added to the space sim is built around mining.

According to a report by MassivelyOP, the Rhino is a six-wheeled buggy with heavy armour and a cockpit that seats three players, alongside cargo capacity sized for extended trips across moons and planetoids. It is large enough that ships will need a dedicated vehicle bay to carry and deploy it, rather than the bays that service the existing SRV line.

A new surface mining loop

The vehicle also serves as the delivery mechanism for a new gameplay system. Frontier describes surface mining as "a new way of acquiring raw materials around geological sites on a planetary surface", but has not yet explained how the loop works in practice or how it relates to the mining already available from ships. The studio has promised further detail.

Several practical questions are unanswered at the point of the reveal. Frontier has not given the Rhino a release date beyond the current month, has not published its stats, and has not said whether it will be the only vehicle capable of surface mining or simply the first. Which ships can accommodate the required vehicle bay is also unconfirmed, which matters for players deciding whether their current fleet can field the buggy at all.

MassivelyOP expects those details to follow over the coming days. For now the published information sits in a Frontier developer blog, with a community breakdown of the reveal produced by the YouTube channel The Buur Pit.

The Rhino continues a pattern of Frontier adding to Elite Dangerous through discrete vehicle and system drops rather than large expansions. A three-seat vehicle is also a notable choice for a game whose surface content has largely been built around solo or small-group play, though the studio has not detailed how crewing the Rhino will work.
