Ubisoft has appointed Eric Baptizat game director of the Assassin's Creed brand, a role that covers the franchise as a whole rather than an individual game. Baptizat previously spent 16 years at the company and left in 2021, according to a report by PC Gamer.
The appointment was made public by Assassin's Creed head of content Jean Guesdon in a LinkedIn post, which PC Gamer cited via Eurogamer. Guesdon framed the hire around Baptizat's history with the series.
Eric needs no introduction in this universe. 16 years at Ubisoft, key contributions to Black Flag, Origins, and Valhalla as Game Director, his passion for gameplay craft and his deep connection to this franchise speak for themselves.
Guesdon added that seeing someone with Baptizat's expertise, rigour and collaborative spirit take the role left him confident and excited about what was ahead for the brand.
A long Ubisoft credit list
Baptizat worked as a designer on a number of lesser-known titles before serving as a designer on James Cameron's Avatar: The Game. He was then lead game designer on Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag, worked on Unity and Origins, and became game director on Assassin's Creed Valhalla.
After leaving Ubisoft in 2021 he joined EA Motive, where he directed the Dead Space remake and then served as game design director on Battlefield 6. His return puts a director credited on several of the better-received entries in the series back inside the studio that makes it.
A franchise in flux
PC Gamer described the appointment as a continuation of ongoing changes at the top of the Assassin's Creed structure. It also noted the current standing of Black Flag, one of Baptizat's credits, which is drawing renewed attention in its Resynced re-release.
Neither the LinkedIn post nor the report set out which projects the brand-level role covers first, or how it sits alongside the teams already working on individual entries. Ubisoft has not published a separate statement on the appointment.
