Playground Games has put a number on how long its Fable reboot will take to finish: the mainline story runs roughly 15 to 20 hours, with a similar amount of side and open-world content on top of it.
The estimate came from a group Q&A at Gamescom 2026 attended by Polygon, where associate game director Will Kennedy was asked how long the game would be. Video Games Chronicle, IGN and Eurogamer all reported the same figures from the session.
We have around 15-20 hours of mainline quest gameplay, we have around 15-20 of side and open-world exploration content gameplay. And then, of course, the life systems are limitless, so you can play them for as long as you want.
When another attendee responded that this made Fable "not a huge game", a second associate game director, Craig Littler, returned to Kennedy's last point. "As Will just said, you can literally play it forever if that's what you want to do," Littler said.
In line with the rest of the series
The figure is not a departure for Fable. IGN notes that user-submitted times on HowLongToBeat put the 2004 original's main quest at about 12 and a half hours, Fable 2 at around 13 and Fable 3 at around 13 and a half. On those numbers the reboot would be the longest main story the series has had, even though it lands well short of the 50-hour campaigns that open-world role-playing games such as Elden Ring, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Assassin's Creed Valhalla have set as a reference point.
Completionists have historically spent longer: IGN puts the first game at roughly 30 hours to see everything and the second and third at around 50.
The "life systems" are the open end
The limitless play Kennedy referred to is the game's simulation layer. Playground has said Albion is populated by 1,000 NPCs, 400 of them in the capital city of Bowerstone, each with a home, hobbies, traits and a personality, each fully voiced, and each able to react differently to what the player does.
What Playground has shown
Xbox put that layer on screen on August 27 in an 18-minute gameplay demonstration narrated by Playground art director Conar Cross. As Video Games Chronicle described it, the video follows the game's hero through Bowerstone, stops at a house the player character owns where their spouse and child live, and shows an in-game quest called The Last of the Greats.
A companion Xbox Wire post covered combat. The Strength, Skill and Will system from the original games returns in a new form, so players will still work with the familiar melee, magic and ranged attack types the series was built on, and Xbox listed the spells available to test in the build that was shown: Fireball, Lightning, Blade, Lift, Rush, Push and Befowl.
Fable is due on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S on February 23, 2027. The game had been set for late 2026 before Xbox moved it in May, saying at the time that 2026 was already packed with Halo: Campaign Evolved, Gears of War: E-Day, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 and Grand Theft Auto VI, and that the move would give Fable "the dedicated moment it deserves".
