Falcons edge Astralis to reach the Esports World Cup playoffs

NiKo led a 2-0 win on Ancient and Dust2 that sends the Cologne Major champions into a Round of 16 starting August 19.

Falcons have qualified for the Esports World Cup playoffs after beating Astralis 2-0, taking Ancient 13-7 before surviving a scrappy Dust2 13-11, HLTV reports.

The result gives the Cologne Major champions a week off before the Round of 16, which begins on August 19. Astralis drop to the lower bracket and will get a second attempt at a bracket-stage place on Sunday, against the winner of BetBoom versus Ninjas in Pyjamas.

Ancient: a fast start, then a reset

Nikola "NiKo" Kovač set the tone on Ancient, where Falcons raced to a 6-1 lead. Astralis pulled level by halftime, with Gytis "ryu" Glušauskas opening up Middle and Jakob "jabbi" Nygaard outdueling former HEROIC teammate René "TeSeS" Madsen.

The reset did not hold. Falcons took another pistol round after the side swap and dropped only one round from there to close out the map, with NiKo still leading the scoreboard.

Dust2: chaos, then a close finish

The second map was messy from the second round, when Ilya "m0NESY" Osipov turned a force-buy with two Scout headshots. Both sides traded low buys and eco wins, Victor "Staehr" Staehr produced several individual highlights for Astralis, and Rasmus "HooXi" Nielsen at one point took a bullet for TeSeS.

Falcons still looked in control after the swap, winning their third pistol round of the series and reaching match point at 12-6 following a 1v2 from TeSeS. NiKo said afterwards that the team then tried to close the game out too early. A fumbled 5v3 started a slide, and Astralis dragged the map to round 24 before NiKo and m0NESY each found doubles to finish it 13-11.

HLTV singled out NiKo as the driving force behind the win, noting that it came at the expense of Rasmus "HooXi" Nielsen, his former captain at G2. Falcons finished the series with three pistol-round wins from four and did not lose a map, despite the disorder on Dust2.

Falcons now wait until August 19 for the Round of 16. Astralis face a shorter turnaround: their lower-bracket elimination match against the winner of BetBoom versus Ninjas in Pyjamas takes place on Sunday, and a defeat there ends their run.
