Fallout 76's next expansion is a Fallout 3 prequel set at Raven Rock

Bethesda says Raven Rock arrives next year, taking Fallout 76 out of Appalachia and into the fiction that precedes Fallout 3.

Bethesda has confirmed that Fallout 76's next major expansion will be a prequel to Fallout 3. The expansion, titled Raven Rock, is planned for next year and was announced in the same update in which the publisher said remasters of Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas had entered pre-production, PC Gamer reports.

Fallout 76 continues to be home to millions of players exploring Appalachia together. With nearly 70 free updates released to date, the journey is far from over. In fact, we have a major Fallout 76 expansion planned for next year; Raven Rock, a prequel story to Fallout 3.

A long way from Appalachia

Raven Rock, also known as Site R, is a former military base and shelter built into a mountainside in the Capital Wasteland — the region east of Vault 76 that Fallout 3 is set in. Bethesda has not said how much of the location the expansion will cover, or how players will reach it.

The prequel framing places the expansion a considerable distance from Fallout 3 in the series' timeline. Fallout 76 is set more than a century before the events of Fallout 3, so a story built at Raven Rock would depict the site long before the role it plays in the later game.

The expansion follows Burning Springs, which took Fallout 76 players into Ohio for the first time in the series' fiction. That release was timed around the second season of the Fallout television adaptation and drew on the desert, deathclaw and raider imagery associated with Fallout 3 and New Vegas. Raven Rock moves in a different direction geographically while keeping the connection to Fallout 3 that Burning Springs gestured at thematically.

Bethesda has not announced a release window beyond next year, and no gameplay footage or further detail on the expansion's content has been shown. The studio said Fallout 76 has received nearly 70 free updates since its 2018 launch.
