Fate/Extra Record will be released worldwide on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 on January 28, 2027, Sony said in a PlayStation Blog post published alongside its State of Play broadcast on September 3. The date came with a new trailer for the game, which is developed by Type-Moon and retells the Moon Holy Grail War.
The game is a rebuild of Fate/Extra, which was released in Japan in July 2010 and was the first role-playing game in the series. Sony said the story has been expanded, character graphics renewed and the presentation updated, and that a deck-building Command Card battle system has been added in place of the original combat.
The Moon Holy Grail War
According to Sony's post, the setting turns on the Moon Cell Automaton, a supercomputer discovered on the moon that created the Holy Grail, a machine said to grant any wish. The resulting tournament takes place in SE.RA.PH, a digital world built by the Moon Cell, where 128 combatants known as Masters compete. Each Master fights beside a Servant, a hero drawn from human history. The player character is a Master with no memory of how they arrived, who must contract a Servant to survive.
Progress runs through three activities. Players gather information to uncover the true name of an enemy Servant, which is tied to that Servant's combat style and weakness; explore floors of the Arena, clearing traps and enemies to strengthen their own Servant and qualify for the Decisive Battle; and then fight a one-on-one final battle in which the losing Master forfeits the tournament and their life.
Combat itself is built on customizable decks. Sony said Commands come in three kinds: attack types that deal damage, guard types that add to a shield and reduce incoming damage, and skill types with their own effects. The available Commands differ by Servant, and new ones are obtained from treasure boxes in the Arena and by defeating powerful enemies. Players choose one of three Servants to fight alongside, each with its own abilities and combat style.
Standard digital editions are planned for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, along with a Digital Deluxe Edition that bundles the digital game, cosmetic costumes, an arranged in-game music pack from the original Fate/Extra, and digital versions of the art book and soundtrack that ship with the physical Limited Edition.
Sony traced the wider franchise to Type-Moon's 2004 PC game Fate/stay night, and said that as of August 2026 the Fate series spans more than 100 titles across games, anime, novels, manga and apps.
