FF7 Revelation will offer to auto-level players who skip side content

Director Naoki Hamaguchi told IGN Japan the option answers Rebirth players who wanted the story without grinding side quests.

Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, the third and final game in Square Enix's Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy, will include an option that raises players' characters to a recommended level automatically, director Naoki Hamaguchi told IGN Japan at Tokyo Game Show 2026. The remarks were reported by IGN and Video Games Chronicle, which cited a translation shared on X by Genki.

Hamaguchi said the feature responds to feedback from Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth players who wanted to experience only the main story and were not interested in side content. Because that side content is also how characters gain levels, players who skipped it found themselves under-leveled and struggled to get through story battles.

For people who really just want to do the main story, we've included an option that asks, if your level is not high enough for the recommended level when you reach a part of the main story, 'Would you like to automatically raise [your level] to the recommended level?'
Naoki Hamaguchi, speaking to IGN Japan

Players who accept the prompt will continue the main story at the level of power the game expects for its upcoming battles. The option is presented at specific points in the story, according to Video Games Chronicle.

Mixed reaction online

IGN reported that the announcement drew a divided response. Critics argued that the option makes the game too hand-holding. Veteran game artist TheCartelDel posted the most widely shared objection, arguing on X that games once taught young players patience and perseverance and that designers were now removing the need to persevere. Other posts quoted by IGN distinguished between options that facilitate an RPG experience and ones that eliminate it, with one user arguing that exploring, fighting and leveling up are the nature of the genre.

Video Games Chronicle noted that recent Final Fantasy re-releases have added similar quality-of-life features. The Final Fantasy 1-6 Pixel Remaster series includes a Boost menu that multiplies earned XP and Gil by two or four times, or halves them for players who want more of a challenge.

Hamaguchi has also said Revelation is a large open-world game that will take completionists at least 100 hours to finish, according to IGN.
