Final Fantasy 14 Mobile will shut down on September 30, a little over a year after launching in China, and the unreleased global version has been cancelled with it, PC Gamer reports. The game has already stopped accepting new players and in-game purchases.
A post on the game’s official site attributes the closure to commercial factors rather than to the game itself.
Due to adjustments in business operations and changes in the market environment, Tencent and Square Enix have, through amicable negotiation, decided to terminate the licensing agreement for Final Fantasy 14 Mobile.
The same announcement addresses players who had been waiting on a worldwide release, offering an apology for being unable to meet their expectations. PC Gamer reads that as all but confirming the global version is dead.
What the mobile version was
Announced in November 2024, Final Fantasy 14 Mobile was developed by LightSpeed Studios — the studio behind PUBG Mobile — under licence from Square Enix. It was not a straight port of the PC and console MMO. Its story covered only the base A Realm Reborn content, ending with The Ultimate Weapon, and quests, systems and jobs were reworked into a shorter, more streamlined form, with a handful of features from later expansions folded in.
PC Gamer notes that the mobile version also carried additions the main game does not have, including extra hairstyles and revised handling of glamour, materia melding and inventory, along with more varied overworld FATEs. Those features now go with it.
This is the second time a version of Final Fantasy 14 has been closed down. The 2012 shutdown of the original 2010 release was written into the game’s narrative and became a canonical event ahead of the A Realm Reborn relaunch. PC Gamer expects the mobile version to receive no such send-off and simply go dark when service ends on September 30.
