Square Enix released a free PlayStation 5 demo of Final Fantasy Resonance on September 3, the same day Sony's State of Play carried a new look at the role-playing game. Sony's PlayStation Blog said the demo contains the entire first chapter and that save data carries over to the full game, which launches on PlayStation 5 on October 22, 2026.
The trailer shown during the broadcast revealed that Sephiroth appears in the game. According to the PlayStation Blog, players can find and challenge him, and beating him unlocks a reward.
The pitch and the systems
Square Enix built Resonance around the question of what Final Fantasy would look like had it kept pushing pixel art, rendering the game in the HD-2D style. The story sends players to protect crystals scattered across the world and to stop Veritas of the Dark, who seeks to destroy it. Chocobos and airships return, alongside a turn-based battle system and a reworked take on the series job system. The opening movie and other cinematics use a production method that renders 3DCG in pixel form.
Combat runs on a timeline at the top of the screen showing the action order of allies and enemies through the next turn, with characters acting from left to right. Each enemy carries a stagger gauge beneath its health bar; depleting it staggers the enemy, stopping it from acting on its turn and lowering its defense.
Character progression runs through visions, items Sony's post describes as the crystallized essences of characters players meet in the story, obtained by completing events involving them. Equipping a vision and winning battles unlocks abilities, and once an ability is learned it can stay equipped under a different vision as long as it fits within a cost limit, so abilities from several visions can be set at once. Visions of legacy Final Fantasy heroes are found at vision crystal sanctums placed around the world.
Two further systems sit on top of that. When a Sweeping Stagger occurs, a vision-specific move called a Resonance can be used at the end of the Extra Phase, covering high-damage attacks, area-of-effect abilities and added effects. Espers, unlocked through the story and side quests, are summons that fight alongside the party for three turns before delivering a finishing move and disappearing.
