Square Enix has scheduled Final Fantasy XI's next version update for September 10 and published an outline of its contents. In a September 3 post on the game's official forums, producer and director Yoji Fujito said the update would be relatively compact in scope because of near-term and long-term work elsewhere, and that it centers on the third phase of changes to the Trust magic system.
That phase raises the maximum number of alter ego points that can be assigned to each category from 50 to 60. Square Enix said the points do not deliver dramatic gains on their own but strengthen alter egos gradually across the board, and that the system carries no penalty for reallocating them. The publisher said a separate part of the Trust work, referred to by the tentative name Trust Equipment System, is still in development, with the team aiming to have it ready by winter.
Free Trial, Ambuscade and campaigns
The update raises the Free Trial's character level cap from 50 to 75, part of a set of trial changes Square Enix said it had announced through the May episode of Freshly Picked Vana'diel and other channels. The publisher also said it plans to remove the Free Trial's time limit in late September.
Ambuscade rotates to two new fights: Volume 1 against Qutrub at content level 119 and up, and Volume 2 against Hydra at content level 117 and up. Square Enix said the Qutrub boss wields a dagger that adds an instant death effect to its regular attacks once its health is low, and that the effect triggers more often while its minions are alive. For the Hydra encounter, it advised cutting down the number of heads.
Several campaigns end before the update lands. The Abyssal Mask, a login item marking the game's collaboration with Wizardry Variants Daphne, is available until September 9, 2026 at 7:59 a.m. PDT, 2:59 p.m. GMT and 3:59 p.m. BST. The Vana'Vacation support campaigns close at the same time; they include the Ambuscade Gallantry Campaign, which doubles the badges of gallantry earned each day, and the Alter Ego Expo Campaign, which boosts alter ego abilities. September's login campaign adds a new scythe. Square Enix also said the special event The Shadow Lord's Dominion, which is running three times between August and October, returns in late September with a new reward attached.
Longer-term work
Fujito gave an update on the story replay feature he raised in his New Year's message, saying development and QA are proceeding but that the volume of missions involved, covering ranks up to 10 for all three nations and their branching paths, makes the work slow. Square Enix said it would share interim updates at intervals. Fujito also said a second set of notorious monsters is being prepared following the ones added to the Seekers of Adoulin areas in August, and that a second Adventurers' Survey is planned after the one conducted in November 2024.
On the July version update's intermittent client freezing, Square Enix said measures addressing what it believes to be one underlying cause shipped in August, and that responses since suggest the problem is resolved. The September update also refreshes the monthly Records of Eminence objectives, adds new items and expands the Porter Moogle's list of supported items. Square Enix noted that the content described is still in development and that names and values may change.
