Square Enix has set an end date for the free subscription period that has covered Final Fantasy XIV on Nintendo Switch 2 since the version launched. The grace period closes on September 7 at 11:59 p.m. local time, Polygon reported, and MassivelyOP reported that subscription fees take effect from September 8.
Square Enix announced the change in a post on the Lodestone blog. As the publisher had said previously, playing on Switch 2 requires a separate subscription rather than folding into an existing one, although the console version does not require Nintendo Switch Online, and players who already hold a Final Fantasy XIV subscription on another platform pay half price for the Switch 2 subscription.
How Switch 2 subscriptions are bought
The Switch 2 subscription cannot be bought the way subscriptions are handled on other platforms. Players buy FFXIV Coins from the Nintendo eShop and then spend them on the Mog Station to manage subscription fees, Polygon reported. The same coins can be used for optional items from the Final Fantasy XIV Online Store. Automatic renewal can be set up on Switch 2, but it only goes through if the account holds enough coins.
Buying and registering the Starter or Complete Edition includes 30 days of play time, after which a subscription is required. MassivelyOP reported that players who have been on the Switch 2 version since its launch still receive that complimentary month, which begins on September 8. Players who have never bought any version of Final Fantasy XIV can continue on the game's free trial without a subscription.
Patch 7.56, PvP Series 11 and the Moogle Treasure Trove
September 8 is also the release date for patch 7.56, which adds the second half of the current main scenario quest and the Beastmaster limited job. The same patch closes PvP Series 11, MassivelyOP reported, ending the window in which players can earn that series' rewards. Rewards already earned can still be claimed through the end of Series 12, and the start of the new series resets player rank and sets fresh goals.
The next Moogle Treasure Trove event begins on September 9 and runs in a couple of parts, in line with previous pre-expansion events of the type. Its headline reward is a new Uolon mount, which requires irregular tomestones as well as Uolon Horn Tokens earned for clearing Ultimog Challenges and Minimog Challenges.
