Fortnite's Cuddles and Chaos event is live, and with it a new Creative Island category built around Sidekicks — the small companion creatures that have followed players around for close to a year without affecting play.
Polygon reports that the event awards free rewards to participating players, and that its purpose is to promote the creature-games category. Epic Games described the July 23 patch as introducing a bundle of "creature-based games where sidekicks take center stage".
From cosmetic to mechanic
Sidekicks react dynamically to what happens in a match, cheering after a kill or looking dejected when their owner goes down. Until now the feature has been limited in two ways: the companions are expensive, and other players cannot see them during matches.
Epic has been laying the groundwork since June, when it began letting Unreal Editor for Fortnite developers use Sidekicks as scriptable NPCs. That release pointed creators toward "monster battlers, cozy farming games, creature-collection RPGs, companion adventures, and more", and islands built with those tools went live alongside the patch on July 23.
Epic has stopped short of spelling out the format. Its trailer features conservationist and Twitch streamer Maya Higa appearing to challenge another player to a pet-based battle, and the CGI presentation echoes Pokémon Go's trainer-focused marketing rather than Fortnite's usual character-led spots. Recent in-game surveys have also asked players whether they have spent time in Palworld.
Whether the category holds attention is a separate question. Epic has historically struggled to sustain interest in modes outside Battle Royale, and the most successful recent island has been Steal the Brainrot, itself modelled on a popular Roblox experience. Fortnite's player numbers have risen in recent months on the back of collectible sprites that also drew comparisons to Pokémon.
The distinction between a permanent system and a set of Creative islands matters here. If the creature games remain a category of player-made experiences rather than a feature of the core mode, the Sidekicks most players already own stay cosmetic outside those islands. Epic has not said whether it intends to change that.
