Fortnite Chapter 7 Season 4, "Override," arrived on Aug. 20 with a video game-themed island and a reworked loot pool, detailed in Epic Games' community post for patch 42.00. The map adds three new major POIs - Green Hill Zone, Reality's Reign and Stone Sanctum - alongside a batch of minor ones. Minor POIs are no longer revealed on the map automatically and have to be discovered: some, like the Pac-Man and Blinky islands, are visible, while override consoles and car washes are smaller.
New weapons, items and gizmos
Seven new pieces of loot are available from the start of the season:
- Midas' Masterpiece: a single-fire golden pistol that can eliminate an opponent with one headshot, with limited ammo
- 8-Bit Shotgun: an automatic shotgun with game-cartridge reloads and a real-time scoreboard tracking combo multipliers
- Mega Buster: Mega Man's arm cannon, firing single pellets, quick-charged shots or long-charged explosive projectiles
- Sonic Power Sneakers: charge a grounded Spin Dash or perform an airborne Spin Attack
- Tetris Rift: rift in Tetris pieces; a completed four-line clear triggers a large AOE heal
- 1-Up Token: respawn with your full inventory after being eliminated
- God Mode Llama: become an unstoppable wrecking ball
The Kingdom Key and Rebecca's Guns are due later in the season. Epic has also unvaulted the Pump Shotgun, Assault Rifle, Ranger Assault Rifle, Drum Gun, Minigun, Tactical Pistol, Dual Pistols, Oni Shotgun, Flare Gun, Bass Boost, Overdrive Grenade and Chug Splash, several of them as loot hacks. Four new gizmos join the pool: the Cheat Code Locator, Extraction Accelerator, Llama Supply Drop and Spicy Taco, the last of which heals and grants a speed and stamina boost.
Overrides, cheat codes and Sprite dust
The season's headline mechanic is the Override Console, a giant building scattered around the map. Only the first player to interact with one can use it, and the effect applies to the entire lobby - making everyone faster like Sonic, granting more XP, or handing out infinite stamina. Cheat codes appear as glitched walls displaying arrow keys, referencing the Konami Code; inputting the sequence awards a Sprite.
Sprites return from Chapter 7 Season 3, but old Sprites do not carry over and a new cast replaces them. Sprite dust unlocks loot hacks in the Override menu, adding items to the loot pool that will not otherwise drop, and further dust raises their chest drop rate. An admin panel button in the top-right of the lobby accepts lobby hack codes that pay out XP, sprites and cosmetics.
The Battle Pass and the Sonic collaboration
Sonic the Hedgehog is the first unlock in the Override Battle Pass, alongside a Tails Sidekick and Epic's own originals Bastian, Grace Crowne, Kittywins, Mali and Phantom, plus Geno and a Wrixel skin that Epic says has "over one million combinations." Shadow, Knuckles and Dr. Eggman went to the Item Shop when it reset at 8 p.m. EDT on Aug. 20. Epic is also running a Shadow Cup in Battle Royale, Zero Build and on mobile, where the Shadow Outfit can be unlocked for free. Crossovers with Pac-Man, Crash Bandicoot and Kingdom Hearts are set to arrive across the rest of the season.
