Forty teams qualify for Apex Legends at the Esports Nations Cup

Regional qualifiers ran from August 1 to 3, settling the field for the November 26-29 finals in Riyadh and a $1.2 million prize pool.

Forty teams have qualified for the Apex Legends competition at the first Esports Nations Cup, Dot Esports reports, following three days of regional qualifiers played from August 1 to August 3. The finals are scheduled for November 26 to 29 in Riyadh.

The qualifiers ran across four regions — the Americas, EMEA, APAC North and APAC South — with each nation contesting a limited number of places at what Dot Esports describes as the first Esports Nations Cup LAN. Forty countries will be represented at the event, the majority of them from EMEA. Two further places, one for the host region and one solidarity spot, have not been filled, and Dot Esports notes the method for deciding them remains unclear.

How the regions finished

The Americas block, which closed the qualifiers, decided the United States and Mexico places. Standings stayed tight for most of the block until SPS — Panicapex, Sikezz and Sauceror — took a 19-point game in Match 5, opening a lead they held to the end against a late push for kill points from Team Skeletron.

EMEA finished at 6pm BST after server problems interrupted play. Poland's roster of Lufka, Nait and Light closed on 81 points, 14 clear of second place. GBR Charvas — Yanzz, Arctic and Vasate — took the Great Britain place, while Deutschland qualified for Germany and 3 Men for France.

APAC South drew entries from a wider spread of countries than the other regions and had a clear leader in Hot Pot, with two Australian teams finishing fifth and sixth. APAC North was the most contested region of the four: only South Korea and Japan had places available, and 18 of the 20 teams in the lobby were competing for the single Japanese slot. The team competing under a melting-face emoji finished top there without winning a match, placing in the top three consistently enough to lead on points.

The top-scoring qualifier in each region:

  • APAC South — Hot Pot, 86 points
  • EMEA — Poland, 81 points
  • Americas — SPS, 73 points
  • APAC North — the melting-face emoji team, 69 points

Hot Pot's 86 points were the highest score posted by any qualifying team. At the other end of the field, Team Ukraine advanced on 4 points, the lowest qualifying score. Several well-known players will not travel to the LAN: Dot Esports names ImperialHal, Koyful and Albralelie among those who missed out.

The Apex Legends prize pool for the Esports Nations Cup is $1,200,000, with $200,000 going to the winning team.
