G2 defeated FURIA 2-0 in the quarter-finals of FISSURE Playground 3, HLTV reported, ending FURIA's run at the event and securing a place in the semi-finals. The result put G2 in the top four of a Big Event for the first time since the team won BLAST Open London more than a year ago, and HLTV described it as G2 breaking their quarter-final curse.
HLTV noted that FPG 3 features a relatively weak field, but that FURIA were one of the highest-ranked teams in attendance, which made the win a notable one for G2.
Overtime on Ancient
The series turned on Ancient, a map FURIA had been in position to win. G2 lost the pistol round but recovered to a 5-2 lead on the T side, despite repeatedly running into stacked areas of the map. FURIA answered through early AWP impact from Danil "molodoy" Golubenko and late-round clutches from Yuri "yuurih" Santos, punishing a weak G2 default and poor calling to take a 7-5 lead into the half.
The second half opened with an exchange of force-buys. G2 appeared to have the better of it through Nikita "HeavyGod" Martynenko, but a Galil round from molodoy and an armorless Tec-9 play from Mareks "YEKINDAR" Gaļinskis kept FURIA ahead, and they extended the lead to 11-7.
G2 then revived their defense with more proactive play. Matúš "MATYS" Šimko stepped up for G2, individual moments swung rounds back and forth, and the map went to overtime, where G2 closed it out. HLTV wrote that FURIA were left to rue letting the map slip after outplaying their opponents tactically for long stretches.
Dust2 goes one way
Dust2, FURIA's own map pick, was one-sided. FURIA's players never got going, while G2's individuals had impact across the map and closed the series out quickly. The result sent G2 into a semi-final against BETBOOM.
