The Coalition has detailed the multiplayer side of Gears of War: E-Day, covering a new player-versus-environment mode called Horde Siege, the return of the Versus player-versus-player suite, and a progression system that the studio says does without a battle pass.
Microsoft published a trailer and a developer deep dive on Xbox Wire, timed with the first hands-on previews. Horde Siege is a 12-player mode that splits three squads of four across individual missions on the same map, described by Xbox Wire as the largest multiplayer maps in the series. Versus carries E-Day's new movement mechanics into four modes at launch.
Progression without a battle pass
In a multiplayer blog quoted by PC Gamer, The Coalition said nearly every item in the game can be earned by playing it.
That means no battle pass, no tour of duty, no gimmicks, no bullshit.
PC Gamer reports that E-Day launches with 60 unlockable characters across its two factions, nearly all obtained through challenges or an in-game currency called Coins, which is earned by playing, levelling up and collecting medals. Coins carry a weekly earning cap that the studio says it is willing to adjust after feedback. Five planned seasons will add maps, modes and cosmetics at no cost.
A premium currency called Iron also exists and can be spent to skip the Coins grind, and PC Gamer notes the game will sell occasional partnered items. The Coalition said it skipped promotional crossovers and outside IP partnerships for skins in favour of its own characters and setting, and that where it does partner, the results are meant to fit the series.
Open beta dates
An Early Access Open Beta begins on August 6 for players who pre-order on Xbox Series X and S or Steam, or who subscribe to Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass. Gears of War: E-Day is an Xbox Play Anywhere title and will be available on Xbox Series X and S, PC, cloud, and Steam, with day-one Game Pass Ultimate access.
