HoYoverse put a new Genshin Impact cutscene animation on its official channel overnight, and it is a bigger piece of film than the format usually gets. "Death Is Near" runs 3 minutes 23 seconds — more than twice the length of the cutscene animations the channel has posted recently — and its English cast list credits a voice for Ronova, the "Ruler of Death." It went live at 9pm Pacific on August 21, nine days after Snezhnaya opened.
Twice the usual runtime
Cutscene animations are normally a short, self-contained beat on the Genshin channel — a minute and a half, one scene, one turn. "Death Is Near" is not that. Line the recent ones up and the outlier is obvious.
Recent cutscene animations, official Genshin Impact channel
- "Death Is Near" — 3:23, posted August 21
- "The Exaiphanes" — 1:41, posted August 20
- "Should We Meet Again" — 1:41, posted last month
- "Be at Peace Among the Tides" — 1:36, posted last month
It is also the second cutscene animation in two days, after "The Exaiphanes" went up the night before. HoYoverse does not usually stack them like that, and it does not usually spend three and a half minutes of animation on one scene mid-patch.
Who's in the credits
The description lists the English cast in full, which is the most concrete thing in the upload — a voice credit is the closest the marketing gets to confirming who is actually in a scene.
English voice cast
- Mitya — Brian Ballance
- "Ruler of Death" Ronova — Aiden Dawn
- Aether — Zach Aguilar
- Odette — Alexis Tipton
- Valeriy — Jordan Reynolds
That is the Snezhnayan cast of Version 7.0 — Mitya and Valeriy, Odette from the current banner — sharing a credit list with a figure the game has talked around far more often than it has put on screen. HoYoverse's own blurb frames the scene around her: death "must face the wrath of the living," it says, and "remains confined by the limits of death."
What the film actually looks like
The English cut carries burned-in subtitles rather than a caption track. It moves from a two-hander in what reads as a Snezhnayan interior, into a shattered chamber ringed with violet arcane circles, through a red eye sigil burning itself onto an open hand and a hard cut to an enormous version of the same eye opening in the dark, and back down to a quiet close between Aether and a blue-haired companion. Three and a half minutes is room to let a scene breathe, and the film uses it.
Where it sits in Version 7.0
Version 7.0, "Everwinter Without Mercy," opened Snezhnaya on August 12 — the seventh and last of Teyvat's nations, and the one the main story has been pointed at since 2020. The run-up was heavy even by Genshin standards: a 4:44 version trailer with 1.2 million views, an hour-long Special Program, a live symphony performance, and character trailers for Odette and Alyosha.
Nine days in, the marketing has shifted from selling the region to serving the story — and "Death Is Near" is the first piece of it that feels sized like a set piece rather than a teaser.
Worth knowing
- Chinese, Japanese and Korean voice-over cuts went up alongside the English one — HoYoverse links all three from the description.
- If you have not cleared the current Archon Quest, treat the video as a spoiler. The channel posts these after the fact, not before.
- At the time of writing it was sitting on roughly 11,000 views and 2,000 likes in its first hour, against 8.28 million subscribers — early enough that the reaction has not formed yet.
