God of War series is recasting Atreus and Thrud for season 2

Prime Video is reportedly seeking older actors for both roles, weeks after Kratos was recast following an injury to Ryan Hurst.

Prime Video's God of War adaptation is set to recast two more of its central characters. Polygon, citing a report from MP1st, says the production is looking for new actors to play Atreus and Thrud in the show's second season.

MP1st reported spotting casting calls dated May that matched the character descriptions used earlier in the show's casting process for the two roles. The notable change is the age bracket: where the original searches sought performers between nine and 12 years old, the newer calls ask for actors aged 14 to 17.

That shift lines up with the source material. The first season adapts 2018's God of War, while the second is set to cover 2022's God of War Ragnarok, and a time jump separates the two games. Atreus and Thrud both take on larger, more physical roles in the sequel, so casting older actors avoids waiting for the original performers to grow into the parts.

A second round of recasting

The show's original cast paired Sons of Anarchy actor Ryan Hurst as Kratos with Callum Vinson, of Chucky, as Atreus and Island Austin, of Insidious: Out of the Further, as Thrud. Hurst's exit was confirmed last month after he sustained an injury during filming on the first season, and a replacement is being sought for that role as well.

Polygon frames the latest changes as a further complication for a production that has already been reworked once, raising questions about how consistent the finished adaptation will feel. No other major recasts have been reported for either season so far, and no footage from the show has been made public, leaving little basis on which to judge the effect of the churn.

The series still has no premiere date, and filming cannot resume until a new Kratos is in place. The next game in the series, God of War Laufey, is scheduled to arrive on PS5 on February 16, 2027.
