Agent 64: Spies Never Die, a first-person shooter built in the mould of GoldenEye 007, will launch on 11 August, solo developer Replicant D6 confirmed in a post on Steam reported by Rock Paper Shotgun in July.
After a grueling 5 and a half years of work, I can finally put a final release date down. Everything is almost ready and set.
A demo has been available on Steam for a substantial part of that development period. Reviewing that early build in 2022, Rock Paper Shotgun described firing from the hip without crosshairs but with forgiving auto-aim, and a separate aiming mode on the right mouse button for shooting off padlocks or landing headshots. The same account described enemies that ran into view carelessly, fled when shot, and had feet that never quite seemed connected to the floor.
What is in the full release
The finished game contains 14 missions in which players take the role of spy John Walter, pursuing a nemesis named Dominic Pulp who is set on taking over the world. Objectives across the campaign include hacking terminals, stealing plans, freeing hostages and shooting a great many suited henchmen across a range of settings. The main story can be played solo, in split-screen, or online with other players.
A separate paradox mode is unlocked through challenges such as completing missions within a time limit, and re-runs those missions with cheats and modifiers applied. Rock Paper Shotgun lists big heads, a melee slap mode and a reloading ban among the available twists.
An arena mode supports multiplayer matches with up to eight players and eight bots. Deathmatch is the default, with additional rulesets built around capturing a briefcase or holding zones on the map. Score challenge matches against bots unlock further maps, characters and music tracks.
The game arrives in a year that has already produced a modern take on the spy genre in IO Interactive's 007 First Light. Agent 64: Spies Never Die is available to wishlist on Steam ahead of its 11 August launch.
