Alkimia Interactive has announced a set of additions for Gothic 1 Remake, including a photo mode, an official mod kit, what the studio calls “alternative progression mechanics”, and a developer mode named Marvin Mode. The studio set out the plans during a THQ Nordic publisher showcase, Rock Paper Shotgun reports.
Alkimia described Marvin Mode as “the Gothic equivalent of a developer mode”, and gave examples of what it opens up.
Think spawning creatures or items, teleporting around the map, or doing some silly things.
The name is inherited rather than invented: Marvin mode was a debug feature in the original Gothic. Rock Paper Shotgun notes that it is said to reference Marvin the Paranoid Android from The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, and that the original game’s test mode could be switched off by entering “42” — details the site attributes to community accounts rather than to the developer.
None of the additions has a date attached. Alkimia said the updates will arrive after a run of smaller ones aimed at fixing bugs and polishing the game.
A next game, without a name
The showcase also carried a tease. Alkimia dropped hints about its next project, which Rock Paper Shotgun reports will be formally announced at next year’s showcase, telling viewers “this adventure is far from over, so stay with us”. The studio did not say what the game is.
A photo mode is an unusual fit for a game set in a prison quarry, and Rock Paper Shotgun’s own review of the remake made the case for it anyway, saying the rebuild “retains the all-timer landscape, with all its verticality and hidden bits” while now looking “fantastic, and lush with detail that accentuates rather than distracting”.
Gothic 1 Remake is Alkimia Interactive’s rebuild of the original Gothic, published by THQ Nordic.
