Graveyard Keeper 2 is out now, PC Gamer reported on Tuesday. The sequel costs $25 on Steam.
Like the original, it is a life sim built around a graveyard. Players craft, farm, build, cook and complete quests for villagers, and also turn human corpses into sellable products — a combination PC Gamer summarised as a cozy game in which you also make things out of the dead.
The same loop, at a larger scale
Writing roughly 13 hours into the game, PC Gamer said the sequel carries over the crafting loop of the first Graveyard Keeper: chopping wood, mining ore, cooking food, levelling skills, earning points and spending them to unlock new technology. The outlet described the number of crafting benches to manage and disciplines to master as the sequel's defining quality, calling the result immediately engrossing — and, at times, extremely grindy.
The corpse economy returns
The part of the series that distinguishes it from other crafting sims is what a player is expected to do with the bodies, and that is where PC Gamer spent most of its write-up. In the first game, the outlet said, it took very little time before it was using a counterfeit royal stamp to sell meat harvested from corpses to the local tavern — profitable, and enough to turn the whole town into unwitting cannibals.
The sequel offers a variation on the same theme. PC Gamer said it set out to play as the upstanding citizen the villagers assume it to be, then unlocked the ability to render fat from human corpses into candles and began making them straight away. The candles raise the decoration score of the local church.
