GTA 6 download codes sold in Japan expire 170 days after launch

Download codes for Grand Theft Auto 6 sold in Japan will stop working 170 days after the game’s release, according to a line in Rockstar’s own support documentation spotted by Dexerto.

The countdown starts on November 19, 2026, the game’s launch day, putting the expiry a little under six months later. Pre-loading opens a week earlier, on November 12, but that only changes when a code can be redeemed rather than when the clock starts.

Why 170 days

The “regional regulations” Rockstar refers to are Japan’s Payment Services Act, the law covering prepaid instruments from gift cards to game codes. Under Article 4, a prepaid instrument that expires within six months is exempt from the registration, reporting and security-deposit requirements attached to anything longer-lived. Companies selling in Japan therefore tend to cap validity just inside that line, and 170 days sits comfortably below it.

The detail lands harder than it otherwise might because Grand Theft Auto 6’s boxed edition contains a download code rather than a disc. Rockstar confirmed that decision roughly a month ago, and has been absorbing complaints from collectors since. Dexerto reports that the expiry applies to PlayStation 5 codes specifically, while Xbox codes carry no regional lock.

Reaction on social platforms has been unhappy, with Dexerto quoting one player as saying “the future of gaming is looking like crap.” The wider context is an industry-wide retreat from physical media — a shift that has already produced a petition against PlayStation dropping discs and pushback from retailers over selling boxes with no game inside them.

Dexerto also notes that dropping the disc has not made digital copies any cheaper, a point a former PlayStation executive addressed publicly in recent weeks. Grand Theft Auto 6 is scheduled for November 19, 2026, with pre-loading opening on November 12.
