Grand Theft Auto 6 doesn't arrive until November 19, but it's already been barred from sale in at least one country. Tajikistan has a standing ban on Rockstar Games' next open-world blockbuster — a decision the Central Asian nation actually made back in 2024, roughly two years ahead of the game's scheduled release.
A Ban That Predates the Game
Tajikistan's authorities blocked GTA 6 in 2024, citing concerns that the game promotes criminal behavior. Officials pointed to depictions of "murder, theft and violence" as justification, framing the franchise's trademark chaos as incitement rather than entertainment. The timing is notable: the prohibition was put in place in 2024, roughly two years ahead of the game's November 2026 launch.
Counter-Strike Caught in the Same Net
GTA 6 wasn't targeted in isolation. Tajikistan issued its ban alongside a parallel restriction on Counter-Strike, suggesting the move was part of a broader crackdown on Western shooters and crime-themed titles rather than a response to any specific content in GTA 6, which was still years away from release at the time.
Gulf Nations: Restricted Bonuses, Not a Ban
Elsewhere, confusion has crept in around GTA 6's status in the Middle East. Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, and Oman were named among the regions excluded from PlayStation pre-order bonus offers tied to the game, which some took as a sign the title had been outlawed there. That isn't accurate, at least not yet — GTA 6 has not been formally banned across the Gulf, and the pre-order exclusions appear to be a separate commercial or regional decision rather than a censorship ruling.
Russia's Objections, Without Follow-Through
Russian officials have also voiced displeasure with the game, reportedly taking issue with content including male stripper characters. Despite the criticism, no formal ban has materialized in Russia, leaving the country's position more rhetorical than the concrete prohibition seen in Tajikistan.
Thailand Reverses Course
Thailand presents the opposite trajectory. The country banned the original GTA back in 2008, but signs now point to GTA 6 clearing that hurdle: a listing on the PlayStation store in Thailand indicates the game is set to be available there, marking a reversal from the franchise's earlier history in the region.
Still Awaiting an Official Rating
Adding another layer of uncertainty, GTA 6 has yet to receive an official age rating. Sony's own store listings note that entries in the series typically include profanity, violence, sexual themes, and depictions of illegal acts, giving a general sense of what regulators will eventually weigh, but a formal classification is still pending as the release date approaches. With just over four months until launch, GTA 6's international reception is shaping up unevenly: one confirmed ban already on the books, several unresolved controversies still simmering, and at least one historically restrictive market now apparently on board.
