Rockstar Games opened pre-orders for Grand Theft Auto 6 on June 25, 2026, with the standard release priced at $79.99 and an Ultimate Edition going for $99.99. Fans who chose a physical copy quickly noticed something odd, though: the boxes shipping now don't actually contain a disc, just a download code. A new report out of Poland suggests that could be fixed for some buyers, but not before the holidays end and only under a fairly specific set of conditions.

A second wave, allegedly

Polish gaming outlet ppe.pl, citing a source who goes by "Graczdari," claims Rockstar is planning to split the physical release into two stages. The first wave, already underway, gives buyers a box with nothing but a code to redeem the game digitally. According to the report, an optional disc release could follow later as a second wave, available to anyone who placed their order before GTA 6 launches on November 19. Those discs, per the claim, wouldn't start shipping until sometime in December, meaning even eligible buyers would be playing off a code for at least a few weeks after launch.

Rockstar hasn't confirmed the word "disc"

Rockstar Support has acknowledged the frustration from customers expecting a traditional physical release, telling them: "You will be able to acquire a physical copy during the following months." Notably, that statement stops short of using the word "disc" at all, so it's still not official that a disc is coming rather than, say, another packaged code or a different physical item entirely. Until Rockstar spells it out directly, the disc timeline remains a report, not a confirmation.

Reasons for skepticism

Graczdari's track record is mixed. The insider has previously posted accurate information about the game, but also picked up a ban from GTA Forums over claims that turned out to be wrong, which is worth keeping in mind before treating the December disc window as settled fact. The code-only approach has already caused friction at retail. Some game stores reportedly turned away the initial physical pre-orders once it became clear the packaging held a code instead of a disc, unwilling to sell what amounts to a digital purchase in a physical box.

Why Rockstar might want digital-first

There's an obvious motive for Rockstar to delay discs regardless of production logistics: leak prevention. Both Grand Theft Auto 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 leaked ahead of their release windows after early physical copies made their way out into the world. Keeping GTA 6 tied to redeemable codes rather than pressed discs, at least until closer to or after November 19, would cut off one of the more reliable leak pipelines Rockstar has dealt with in the past. For now, anyone who's pre-ordered a physical copy of GTA 6 should expect a code at their door, not a disc, when the game launches November 19. Whether a disc shows up afterward hinges on an unconfirmed report and a source with an inconsistent history, and Rockstar's own language has carefully avoided promising one.
