Resellers on eBay are charging steep premiums for Grand Theft Auto 6 pre-orders, even though the game isn't scarce in any traditional sense and remains purchasable at full retail price through official digital channels. The pricing gap highlights how collectible-style scalping tactics are being applied to a release that, by its own packaging, doesn't actually depend on physical stock.
Scalped Listings Command Steep Premiums
A survey of active eBay listings shows GTA 6 pre-orders changing hands well above their official prices. One listing for a PS5 or Xbox Series X|S copy is priced at $138.20, plus a further $17.03 in shipping. A separate PS5 pre-sale listing asks $120, with $9.53 tacked on for shipping. Standard-edition PS5 copies, which retail at $79.99, are being resold for anywhere between $87.90 and $101.19. Even the Ultimate Edition, which normally sells for $99.99, is listed at $101.19. Altogether, the markups on these listings range from roughly $8 to as much as $59 above what buyers would pay at retail.
Why There's No Real Shortage
What makes the markups notable is that there's no supply crunch behind them. GTA 6 can still be pre-ordered directly through official digital storefronts at standard retail pricing, with no signs of stock running low. Even the "physical" boxed editions being resold on eBay don't contain a disc — they include only a download code redeemable for the digital game. That means there's nothing tying availability to physical inventory the way there would be with a disc-based release, and no real mechanism for the kind of scarcity that typically fuels reseller markups.
Scalping Without Scarcity
Scalping has traditionally thrived around genuinely limited stock — consoles, collector's editions, or discs allocated in finite batches. GTA 6's boxed pre-orders break that pattern entirely, since the box itself holds nothing more than a redemption code. That leaves resellers marking up a listing based on perceived urgency around a high-profile release rather than any real constraint on supply, banking on buyers not checking official storefronts before completing a purchase.
Pre-Load and Launch Dates
Digital pre-loading for GTA 6 is set to begin on November 12, ahead of the game's release on November 19, 2026. Anyone who pre-orders through official channels between now and launch will have the same day-one access as anyone paying inflated eBay prices for a boxed copy. With digital pre-orders still open at retail price and no disc-based supply to run dry, the eBay markups amount to buyers paying a premium for convenience or perceived exclusivity rather than genuine access. Shoppers looking to secure a copy of GTA 6 ahead of its November launch have little reason to pay above MSRP when official storefronts are still selling at full price.
