A mod published on Nexus enables local split-screen co-op in the PC version of Halo: Campaign Evolved, a mode the remake ships with on Xbox and PS5 but not on PC, where co-op is online only.
The mod, "Halo Campaign Evolved Split-screen Coop" by Jpurd123, does not add the feature so much as switch it on. Its description says it activates code already present in the PC build. If that is accurate, the PC version supports local play and Halo Studios simply left it turned off. The author notes the mod was made with AI assistance.
Once installed, split-screen is triggered with a keyboard shortcut before a session begins. Comments on the mod page report it working reliably, provided the setup steps are followed exactly as written. That qualifier is doing some work: the instructions are specific, and the reports of success are tied to them.
The caveats
The mod currently supports two players rather than the four the remake's co-op is built around. It has only been tested against the Steam release, so copies bought through PC Game Pass or the Microsoft Store may not work. Users also report that both players need controllers: mixing keyboard-and-mouse with a controller causes the keyboard to drive both screens at once.
PC Gamer frames the omission as one that matters more now than it once did, pointing to living-room PCs and local game streaming as reasons split-screen has become relevant on the platform again. The Master Chief Collection also shipped without split-screen on PC, and community workarounds for those games took far longer to appear than the roughly one day it took here.
Whether the mod is developed further is unclear; PC Gamer notes its AI-assisted construction leaves that an open question. Halo Studios has not commented on why the feature is disabled on PC.
